Welcome to the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, one of the most comprehensive and acclaimed institutions for the study of music.
For nearly a century the Jacobs School of Music has educated and shaped the careers of countless performers, scholars, and music educators who are leaders in their respective fields around the globe. The more than 1,600 students who study at the Jacobs School of Music come from all 50 states and as many as 55 countries, and benefit from the intensity and focus of a world-class conservatory combined with the broad academic offerings of a major university.
The essence of a great music school is its faculty. The more than 170 full-time faculty members in residence at the Jacobs School of Music include internationally celebrated performers, scholars, and teachers who are dedicated to inspiring and mentoring the next generation of music leaders. In addition, many top musicians and scholars visit the school each year to give master classes and guest lectures or to serve as visiting artistic directors, conductors, and teachers.
The breadth and number of performance opportunities are unparalleled in collegiate music study, offering more than 1,100 performances a year, including 7 fully staged operas and 3 ballets. Performing groups during the Fall and Spring semesters include 6 orchestras, 13 choirs, 4 bands, 4 jazz bands, and a variety of chamber ensembles. The IU Summer Music Festival is the most substantial collegiate project of its kind in the nation.
The school's facilities, located in the heart of the IU Bloomington campus, feature outstanding performance spaces ranging from the world-class opera stage of the Musical Arts Center, to more intimate spaces such as Auer concert Hall, Recital Hall, and Ford-Crawford Hall.
The five buildings that make up the Jacobs School of Music feature more than 200 practice rooms, choral and instrumental rehearsal rooms, numerous cutting-edge recording studios and electronic labs, and more than 100 offices and studios. In addition, the William and Gayle Cook Music Library, recognized as one of the largest music libraries in the United States, houses more than a half-million cataloged items, as well as the innovative Variations Project of digitized recordings and scores, the Latin American Music Center, and the Thomas Binkley Early Music Archive.
